Eye discharge in babies

Days after Baby Z was born, I noticed a yellowish discharge on his left eye. It was irritating him so much because it would often turn into crust, which would make his eye hard to open.
Baby Z soundly sleeping

Whenever, I would see that gooey kind of discharge, I would immediately wipe it with a wet cotton or soft towel. However, those yellowish discharge was still coming out from his eye every time he sleeps.

I was kind of having some trouble on how to stop his eye problem. I found help on some parenting sites and online forums. I learned that most newborn babies have this kind of eye problem because of a blocked tear duct. Most babies doesn't have their tear ducts developed or opened when they are born, which causes those ducts to be clogged and infected.

Baby Z was born 2 weeks before his due. I think that may be the reason why he had an underdeveloped tear duct.

What are the ways to treat it?

1. Clean the discharge with a warm compress
2. Massage the surrounding area, especially the space in between the eyes and the nose. I did this almost 5 - 6x a day whenever I change his diapers or clean him up.

3. Apply breast milk on the infected eye. Breast milk is known for it's anti-bacterial properties, which would help ward off any infection from your baby's sensitive eyes. I would often drop some of it on his left eye after massaging it.
4. If symptoms persist, consult a doctor.

These are just home remedies that you can do to your babies. I'm not a doctor but just an experienced mom. Well, I did the first 3 steps for around 3 days and my baby's left eye eventually cleared up. :) Sorry for not posting pictures of my son's crusted eye. I don't find it appealing as a loving mom. :)

  1. My 5 month old baby is currently suffering from that, as of writing this. They say I should put breastmilk, kaso naisip ko baka lalo mainfect. I remember my eldest son used to have that two when he was just 4 days old. The doctor prescribe Fucitalmic Drops/Ointment (whichI could not exactly remember). I'd like to use it to my 2nd baby but I am afraid of self medicating my children.

    1. You can always consult a doctor if you have doubts on self medicating.. However, breast milk is one of the purest antibacterial liquid that has been produced by moms like us. :D If you don't want to do that, you can always massage the tear duct area. :D
